Qualifications for Ministry
Are You Qualified?
Many believers question their fitness for ministry, asking if they have enough maturity, faith, or scriptural knowledge. However, scripture teaches that the gifts of the Spirit are for all believers. By examining the disciples Jesus chose, we see that perfection is not a prerequisite for being used by God.
The Disciples' Imperfections
Jesus' disciples were not fully mature when He gave them power and authority.
• Lack of Faith: They were weak in prayer and faith but asked Jesus to teach them.
• Lack of Understanding: They often missed basic teachings but remained close to Jesus to learn.
• Poor Attitude: They could be stingy, judgmental, and mean-spirited.
• Selfish Ambition: They argued over position and desired revenge on those who rejected them.
• Unfaithfulness: They experienced doubt and disloyalty, yet Jesus restored them.
Overcoming Disqualification
Jesus did not disqualify His disciples for these flaws, and He will not disqualify you.
• Lack of Faith: Ask the Lord to increase it.
• Lack of Knowledge: You do not need a theology degree; simply study the Word and ask for wisdom.
• Character Flaws: Allow the Holy Spirit to transform you; be willing to be "in process".
Ministry and Maturity
A common question is which comes first: ministry or maturity? Ephesians 4:11-16 reveals that doing the "work of the ministry" is actually a vital part of the maturing process. We cannot wait until we are perfect; we mature as we minister.
As C.S. Lewis noted, we are like eggs that must hatch or go bad; the hatching process is messy but essential.
